The Hawaii State House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 212 commending Waialua Robotics Team 359 for its competitive achievements in VEX and FIRST Robotics and for advancing to world championship competitions.
Representative Quinlan offered the resolution and Representative Peruso seconded it. Peruso described the program as a community-built effort that develops leadership and technical skills: "This is what public education looks like when it's working, when young people are trusted with real responsibility and supported to meet it," Peruso said. The House adopted the resolution by voice vote.
Members on the floor detailed awards and honors earned by the team at state, regional and international events, citing VEX state championships, FIRST Robotics regional awards including Impact and Innovation awards, and individual recognitions such as a Woody Flowers Finalist. Team lead Glenn Lee and student leaders attending the session were recognized by members; Representative Matsumoto singled out Mr. Lee's longstanding mentorship and efforts to secure grants.
Representatives noted that the team’s successes provided a morale boost for the Waialua community after recent flooding and that the students’ work demonstrates the value of mentor networks and alumni support. Certificates and leis were presented to students and mentors on the floor.
