The Bangor City Airport is seeking committee support to pursue two separate federal grant opportunities, Airport Director Jose told the finance committee on April 6.
First, staff requested permission to submit an application to the Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program to help attract additional westbound air service. Jose noted the airport received similar awards in 2003 and 2010 and said the program is competitive and available only in some reauthorization cycles; staff must secure a council order before the May 4 application deadline.
Second, staff outlined an FAA Airport Improvement Program grant application for Taxiways Alpha and Mike. Bids for the taxiway project returned a construction estimate of about $13.4 million plus approximately $1 million for construction administration, producing a total near $14.5 million. Jose said roughly 95% of that project cost is expected to be eligible for federal funding; staff will finalize bid numbers and the funding package in consultation with FAA staff before returning with a recommendation to award.
Committee members moved to authorize staff to apply for both grants and to forward the council order for a full council vote. The authorization will allow airport staff to meet the federal application deadlines and continue coordination with airline partners and the FAA.
