Martin County commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution April 7 accepting a 1.28‑acre parcel adjacent to the Hob Sound Scrub Preserve donated by Louise Yiser.
Environmental Resource Administrator John May introduced the item and described the property's prior entitlement for four multi‑story townhomes and said the parcel contains critical habitat and state‑listed species. Yiser told the board she was carrying on her family's conservation legacy and related the story of land her family had preserved in other communities.
Commissioners praised the donation as a meaningful preservation step. Commissioner Caps noted the parcel is home to roughly five gopher tortoises and sits at the preserve entrance, and called the gift "a blessing to the people of Martin County." Commissioner Heatherington and others emphasized the donor's private‑sector partnership role and the leverage available to the county for additional conservation work.
The resolution accepted the land for perpetual conservation and public use; staff will record the deed and integrate the parcel into the preserve's management and public‑access planning. The board's environmental staff said the parcel's preserve status will protect a Champion pine tree that would otherwise have been removed for a driveway under the previously approved development plan.
Actions: Board adopted resolution approving acceptance of the 1.28‑acre donation (unanimous).
