Pickens City Council voted 6–1 on May 11 to appoint Lori Hillstock as assistant municipal judge after the sitting municipal judge recommended her as a backup for absences.
Judge (Speaker 15) told the council she had discussed the position with Hillstock and recommended her to cover two weekends per month and as needed. Hillstock described a background primarily in higher education, leadership development and strategic planning and said she owns a small business focused on shared leadership development. She acknowledged she had not yet completed state judicial training or the courts administration certification required for judges. "I do not have a background in criminal justice. I do not have a background in law," Hillstock said during questions from council.
One council member said the position should be publicly posted to ensure fairness and transparency in hiring and to ensure the city identifies the most qualified candidate. The motion to appoint passed by a 6–1 vote. The judge and other council members noted that Hillstock will be required to complete any state-required training and certification.
