Local spay/neuter group asks Union County for help funding spring campaign

Kathy Shier, representing a local spay/neuter group, asked the Union County Board of Commissioners to help promote and financially support a spring campaign that aims to sterilize 100 cats.

Shier told the board the group has already fixed 59 cats this year and has about 65 additional appointments scheduled through mid‑April. She said the program estimates an average cost of about $100 per animal and is seeking $10,000 in donations to meet the target; she also asked whether commissioners or businesses could sponsor blocks of 20 animals for $2,000.

The request focused on preventing future litters among outdoor and community cats and on assisting low‑income owners who cannot afford veterinary services. "Every cat we fix will prevent future litters," Shier said, describing the effort as a humane, cost‑effective approach to reduce strain on families and neighborhoods.

Commissioners thanked Shier and said the board would not take a vote on the item because it was not on the published agenda. The chair offered to post campaign information on the county website and suggested staff could share details on county communication channels so residents and businesses can donate or learn more.

Shier said the group is raising money and that volunteers handle most operations; she said the organization has previously secured modest municipal support, including a $900 contribution from a city last summer for equipment.

Next steps: The board did not adopt or promise direct funding at the meeting; staff will post campaign information and commissioners encouraged the presenter to continue outreach to municipalities and local service groups.
