Small sanitary district tells commissioners it needs emergency pump funding after failure

A representative for a small sanitary corporation told the Union County Board of Commissioners that a failed lift‑station pump has left the district operating at minimal capacity and paying steep temporary pumping costs.

"We have been running just bare minimum for quite some time and now we have a station with a pump" not working, said Mr. Jackson, who identified himself as speaking for the sanitary corporation. He told the board the district is spending about $1,000 per week to pump out sewage to avoid backups, has roughly $3,300 in its account and has received replacement-pump quotes in the $10,000–$12,000 range.

Mr. Jackson said the system serves about 32 customers who pay roughly $30–$40 per month; he described difficulties obtaining assistance and noted the district's last audit was in 2011. He said renting a temporary pump had been quoted at about $3,400, which would exhaust the district's balance.

Commissioners and staff asked follow-up questions about audits, partnership options with nearby water providers and potential EPA involvement for technical review or funding. Staff asked the district to provide recent audits and financial records so the county can evaluate grant eligibility and other aid. The chair and several commissioners said they would pursue contacts and follow up on potential funding or technical assistance.

Next steps: Staff will work with the district on documentation (including the requested audits) and commissioners indicated they would follow up with on-site review and outreach to regional partners and agencies.
