At a council briefing, a Parks and Recreation staff member described the department’s range of community programs, saying the city runs weekend basketball and multiple volleyball sessions and recently introduced a men’s volleyball league.
“A: Yeah, so I guess starting in a gym, we host a variety of programs and classes,” the parks staff member said, describing regular weekend basketball and volleyball play and noting, “This year, we introduced a men's league for volleyball. That was a request that we got, so we went ahead and put that together.”
The staff member said parks staff also organize the city’s concert series and run summer programs at Century West Park, including slip-and-slide activities and seasonal events such as an upcoming Easter egg hunt. “The staff has a hand in all of our concerts in the park,” the staff member said, and listed other recurring community activities staff coordinate.
Staff also detailed operational coordination: they work with the golf course and parks department on ball-field needs for baseball, soccer and football, and coordinate with the local school district to host basketball in school gymnasiums and support school softball teams. The parks staff member described pools and aquatics offerings as well, saying the department manages outdoor and indoor pools and provides swimming lessons.
The presentation emphasized program development and learning from pilots. The staff member said some experiments “don't work out” but that the department tries again and adjusts programming as it gains experience. A meeting participant briefly affirmed the approach, saying, “Right, that's how you you learn and grow.”
The discussion was informational; no motions or votes were recorded on the topics covered during this briefing.
