Vinton council sets FY27 budget work sessions, tentatively schedules March public hearing

The Vinton City Council set dates for FY27 budget preparation during its Jan. 8 meeting, scheduling department-head presentations for Jan. 21 at 5:00 p.m. and a deeper discussion on Jan. 28 at 5:00 p.m. (with Jan. 18 as a backup). The council and staff discussed additional sessions in early to mid-February if needed.

City staff reminded the council of statewide deadlines: the budget must be submitted by April 30, and the county requires materials for mailing by March 5. Council members tentatively set a standalone public hearing for March 26 at 6:30 p.m., after which the council will hold its regular meeting on the same night at 7:00 p.m. Staff said the goal is to approve the budget on April 9, subject to scheduling and auditor availability.

Council members debated calendar conflicts and agreed to prioritize having all members present for department presentations; staff will circulate a schedule and confirm auditor availability for related reporting. The council asked departments to be ready for 30-minute presentation slots during the Jan. 21 session.

The calendar-setting places the city on a timeline to complete budget hearings and state filing on the usual cycle for municipal budgets.
