An agency official for the East Ramapo Central School District said the district will ask voters on Tuesday, May 19 to approve a $367,000,000 budget for the 2026–27 school year that would not increase the local property tax levy.
The announcement, made in Spanish, framed the proposal as a fiscally responsible plan that balances current needs with future planning. "Nuestro presupuesto propuesto de 367000000 de dólares concilia las necesidades actuales con una planificación cuidadosa para el futuro," the official said, noting the plan is intended to preserve educational services without a tax increase.
Why it matters: The district’s transportation operation serves not only its public-school students but also more than 35,000 students attending nonpublic schools, the spokesperson said, making transportation a major line-item. Officials also listed priorities that include improving academic outcomes, upgrading long-deferred building systems and expanding services for English learners and students with disabilities.
District presentation of the proposal emphasized process and priorities. A second agency official explained the budget process began early in the school year and this year built on a prior zero-based budgeting exercise. "La elaboración del presupuesto escolar es un proceso realmente complejo," the speaker said, adding the district developed the plan by starting from the prior baseline and incorporating necessary additions.
Programmatic details cited by district officials include expanded early-literacy work for incoming kindergarteners, increased supports for students learning English and for students with disabilities, greater emphasis on mathematics and STEM instruction, and upgrades to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems across district buildings. Officials also said the budget would fund new athletic and band uniforms, update physical-education equipment and expand access to classroom technology to support instruction.
On financing strategy, the district said it plans to preserve and expand services by maximizing available state aid and managing departmental budgets and operations. The spokesperson pointed residents to the district website, ERCSD.org, for the full proposed budget, information about Board of Education candidates and polling locations, and urged community members to vote.
Next step: Voters will decide on the budget at the polls on Tuesday, May 19. The district did not provide further details about contingency plans if voters reject the proposal.
