In a Superintendent Showcase interview, Mrs. Deb RLE, director of elementary curriculum, said district schools recently marked Celebrate Literacy Week and took part in Read Across America, a nationwide initiative promoting reading and literacy.
"Read Across America is a nationwide initiative...to celebrate literacy and the importance of students reading, writing, talking, thinking, problem solving," Mrs. Deb RLE said, describing the district events as opportunities to promote literacy across content areas.
She said schools invited community guests, including the superintendent and other volunteers, to read with students. "It was really neat to see so many community members take part of the Read Across America days. I was leaving one campus and saw our mayor coming into our campus," she said, citing the mayoral visit as an example of strong community partnerships.
Mrs. Deb RLE emphasized that literacy is more than decoding words: it includes writing, speaking and critical thinking that support success in other subjects. "We want to see our students reading, writing, thinking and speaking in every class every single day," she said.
As the interview wrapped, Mrs. Deb RLE reminded families that students will return from spring break on March 23 and encouraged children to continue reading during the break. "Students, please enjoy your spring break, stay safe, have fun, and don't forget to read every single day," she said.
The interview concluded with a final call to "Read Across America." No formal actions or policy decisions were discussed during the segment.
