The Rockford Public School District Board of Education on April 17 discussed whether to pursue a capital-improvement levy to address district technology needs, with staff saying the total needs are substantial and could be roughly $3 million.
Board members and staff described the levy discussion as a multi-step process that would include identifying essential versus enhancement projects, modeling tax impacts and presenting transparent information to the community before any election. The board asked staff to continue refining cost estimates and to bring options for duration and ask amount back at the May meeting.
School staff emphasized that technology is integrated into teaching and operations and that not addressing aging infrastructure could limit access for students across campus, including outdoor spaces such as athletic fields. Presenters said some technology items are operational necessities while others would be enhancements, and that a levy would not necessarily cover every identified item.
No formal decision or vote was taken. The board directed staff to continue community-facing analysis and to present clearer cost-and-impact scenarios at the next meeting so trustees can weigh whether to place a question before voters.
