Public works proposes temporary opening in seat wall to restore pedestrian access near Senior Lopez

Public Works Director Jack Williams asked the board to approve a temporary cut in a decorative seat wall adjacent to the barber shop and the Senior Lopez entrance, explaining the change is intended to restore pedestrian access after a fire forced closure of one entrance.

Williams said staff observed people climbing the wall where the blocked entrance had been and that a cut would reduce tripping and falling hazards. He suggested a target opening near five feet, constrained by a lamp post and existing wall conditions, but said the city would accept no less than 24 inches if necessary. The work would be performed largely by public works with masonry repointing done by a mason (the city has salvaged bricks available) and an estimated city cost of roughly $1,500.

Williams described the work as temporary and reversible: the bricks can be replaced if the square is reconstructed and the wall restored in the future. Board members acknowledged the access problem and agreed to put the item on the Tuesday agenda for a vote.
