A city presenter urged residents to review a proposed renewal of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or T-SPLOST, saying the 0.75% tax has financed significant local road and pedestrian projects and will again appear on the ballot this November.
The presenter described T-SPLOST as "a small tax with a big impact," saying, "It's a small tax with a big impact. I just 0.75% or 3/4 of a penny and because everybody who shops or dines in the city pays it, it adds up really fast." The message framed the revenue as a pay-as-you-go source for transportation work rather than a property-tax increase.
City-funded projects cited by the presenter included the Mount Vernon Road and Johnson Ferry Improvement Project, a sidewalk network on Brandon Mill Road, Path 400, and planned Hammond Drive projects. The presenter said those projects have been supported by prior T-SPLOST approvals and positioned the November question as a chance for voters to decide whether to renew the tax for future projects.
Voters first approved T-SPLOST in 2016 and renewed it in 2021, the presenter said. To help residents review the list of proposed projects and ask questions, the city is holding open houses on April 8, April 14 and April 16, the presenter added.
The presenter encouraged residents who want more detail on the proposed project list to attend the open houses and said the ballot renewal in November will give voters the opportunity to continue funding similar transportation projects.
