Topeka board approves goals, resource adoptions and upholds a discipline hearing decision; motions carry unanimously

The Topeka Public Schools Board of Education took several formal actions and voted unanimously on multiple items during the meeting.

At the start of the meeting the board voted to recess into executive session twice: first "for 15 minutes to discuss confidential personnel matters to protect the privacy of the individuals being discussed pursuant to the personnel exception in the Kansas Open Meetings Act," with the superintendent and executive staff invited, and secondly "for 15 minutes to consult with our attorney on matters protected by the attorney-client privilege to protect the board's position in potential litigation," with the superintendent and board attorney invited. Later in the meeting the board moved to approve board goals numbered 7, 12 and 5 "as discussed tonight"; that motion carried unanimously. The board also moved to approve the presented instructional resources for adoption and purchase; that motion likewise carried unanimously. In a separate action, the board moved to uphold the hearing officer's decision from March 23, 2026 in a student-discipline matter; board members voted to uphold the decision unanimously.

Consent agenda items were approved and the board authorized the board president or superintendent to sign special project and purchasing contracts on behalf of the board. A question about a Robinson school foundation issue prompted staff to explain a planned summer repair using polymer injection beneath the slab to lift and level the stage-area floor; bids will be solicited and the work scheduled to avoid interfering with summer school.
