The Darien Board of Education completed a second reading and adopted revisions to district nondiscrimination policies at its April meeting after a legal summary and board discussion.
Legal counsel summarized a written legal opinion and told the board that "Connecticut law still protects students and staff from discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression," and said it is unclear whether any recent executive order would override state law. In response to questions, a board member moved to adopt the policy revisions as recommended by the policy committee with the removal of a Title IX reference in policy 52‑75. The motion received a second and passed; the roll call listed members voting in favor and recorded one opposed vote (Brown) and one abstention (Grambling).
During public comment earlier in the meeting, State Representative Tracy Mara addressed special-education policy at the state level, noting that "special education in Connecticut is both costly and frankly, inequitable," and described House Bill 7,277—introduced to change funding and regionalization of services, set outplacement rates and add an ombudsman. Mara invited district residents to meet and provide input to the special-education committee and offered to collect constituent feedback.
Next steps: revised nondiscrimination policies will be incorporated into board policy materials; district counsel and staff will follow up on any implementation or communication steps. Constituents who wish to provide input on House Bill 7,277 were directed to Representative Mara’s forthcoming outreach.
