SWAG and partners report expanded services, early‑learning plans for Southwest Gainesville

Dorothy Thomas, co‑chair of SWAG (the Southwest Advocacy Group), told the commission May 24 that the grassroots neighborhood group has built partnerships that produced a clinic, a resource center and outreach events that have reached thousands of residents.

Tammy Carmichael of the Alachua County Health Department described local clinic outcomes: mobile units began services in April 2014 and a brick‑and‑mortar Southwest Clinic now offers pediatric and dental services, reporting continued increases in client visits and more than 37,000 medical and dental services provided since opening. Amanda Elliott, manager of the SWAG Family Resource Center, outlined family support programs, parenting resources and summer enrichment activities.

Steve PennyPacker, CEO of Partnership for Strong Families, presented data showing reduced verified child‑maltreatment reports in the SWAG‑served area and said the community resource‑center model is being expanded across the region. SWAG also reported about $250,000 in matching funds toward a planned Child Center, and said University of Florida programs would provide management and early‑learning expertise.

Commissioners praised the collaborative model and asked presenters to return with specific funding requests when ready. Chair thanked the group and encouraged continued proposals to the board.
