Weatherford retreat discusses facilities backlog, EOC plans and fire-station options

Staff presented an inventory of facilities, a recent facilities-needs assessment and several near-term capital items for council consideration.

Presenters said the city maintains roughly 35 permanent facilities and that a more detailed facilities-needs assessment is being used to prioritize 2022 budget items. Specific near-term projects called out included restroom renovations at the library and City Hall (advertised for bid; potential construction late summer/early autumn), an EOC reconfiguration at City Hall to improve emergency response flexibility, and kennel replacement at the animal shelter with elevated construction estimates relative to earlier allocations.

Council asked for clarity on the fire-station study (Station 1) and how renovation costs compare with new construction. Staff described a phased approach and said BRW (the consultant working on the police station design) is preparing options and cost comparisons; council requested firm numbers and a timeline before making budgetary commitments. Staff said the city currently has capacity in its debt structure for projects in the mid-million-dollar range but that amounts above that could require voter approval or bond issuance.
