Washington County commissioners voted June 4 to accept a $75,000 READI Group grant to update the county comprehensive plan and to contract StructurePoint for the comprehensive plan while assigning Hoosier Planning Associates to complete the land-use plan.
The board — Commissioners Phillip Marshall, Todd Ewen and Rick Roberts — approved the selections after recommendations from the Plan Commission and the Comprehensive Planning Group. Commissioner Todd Ewen moved to approve the proposals and select StructurePoint for the comprehensive plan and Hoosier Planning for the land-use plan; Commissioner Rick Roberts seconded the motion and it passed.
The county emphasized housing and workforce as priority topics for the update. Matthew Roark of StructurePoint told the commissioners he plans to gather community input, evaluate physical sites and identify existing local assets the county can build on. Roark said the firm will meet with all three county school systems to solicit input and set up outreach at local festivals to gather citizen feedback.
Hoosier Planning will work with the Plan Commission to finalize zoning-related elements of the land-use plan, the commissioners said. The board scheduled a follow-up comprehensive-plan meeting for July 1 to review outreach plans and next steps.
Why it matters: A new comprehensive plan guides long-term decisions about housing, land use and infrastructure. Local officials told the board the plan should include actions that help retain and engage younger residents and address workforce needs.
The commissioners’ next scheduled check-in on the comprehensive plan is July 1 at 11:00 a.m.
