PARSIPPANY — Board members discussed six proposed resolutions for the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) delegate assembly at the May 7 meeting, airing both procedural and substantive objections and directing local delegates how to vote.
The discussion focused early on resolution No. 1, which would permit school boards to adopt ranked‑choice voting where state law allows. "I am not in support of ranked choice voting," said one board member (speaker 2), who raised concerns about administrative complexity and differences from the district’s current voting system. Another board member said the resolution merely would preserve the option for districts to choose and is not mandatory.
Doctor Wright (speaker 7) said he had attended a presentation by Voter Choice New Jersey and acknowledged an implementation learning curve but described ranked choice as workable where jurisdictions commit to it. After discussion and a straw‑vote process, the board reached consensus positions on several of the resolutions and instructed its delegates to represent the board’s direction at the NJSBA assembly; members were also told they may follow up by email if they have remaining concerns.
Board members also debated resolution language on topics such as equitable distribution of education aid and governance matters affecting county vocational programs. The board did not take a formal recorded vote on the package as a whole but provided guidance to the delegates and asked members to submit specific objections by email when necessary.
