Board splits on committee reshuffle after objections over nominee’s pending legal matters

The Fairfax County School Board on March 26 approved a package of committee and liaison assignments for a newly seated Braddock district member, but not before a contentious debate over whether a particular board member with an active legal matter should be appointed vice chair of the Budget Committee.

A motion to divide the question failed and prompted extended discussion. Several board members said they could not support the proposed appointment because media reports and filings show an ongoing legal claim that, according to speakers at the dais, alleges misuse of company funds and raises questions about optics and fiduciary suitability for a budgeting leadership role.

One board member said she would not vote for the motion “because the board member that is proposed to be the vice chair of the Budget Committee is currently involved with a legal matter,” and she cited additional allegations about campaign‑style activities conducted by staff during school hours. Other members argued for shared leadership opportunities and noted past precedent for reassigning roles.

The motion carried by roll call: 7 in favor, 3 opposed and 1 abstention. Members recorded their positions on the public record during the vote.

Board leaders described the vote as part of routine housekeeping following a vacancy and welcomed the new Braddock representative to the board. Several speakers urged continuing vigilance about process, transparency and postponing contested leadership placements until legal issues are resolved.
