The Pickerington Local Schools Board on March 23 approved adjustments to substitute pay rates, including a new campus-security building substitute classification, and held a lengthy discussion (first read) of elementary and middle-school fees, with particular attention to the technology-protection fee for district-issued Chromebooks.
Board members said parents are often unaware of how the technology-protection fee is applied and pressed staff about whether the fee could be treated as a proactive opt-out rather than an item families must add. Mrs. Richardson (speaking about payroll/minimum-wage impacts on hourly classifications) explained that some rates are driven by changes in minimum wage and that the highlighted rate changes in the packet reflect those statutory minima.
Staff acknowledged communication gaps and agreed to prepare a summary for parents explaining how the protection fee works and when fees appear on bills. The board approved the substitute-pay schedule and the new campus-security sub rate by unanimous roll call.
Next steps: staff will develop a parent-facing summary of fee mechanics and tech-protection coverage and will implement the approved substitute-pay schedule.
