Commission approves $180,000 microsurfacing contract to save on patching costs

The Atchison County commissioners approved a proposal to piggyback Leavenworth County's pricing and hire Vance Brothers to microsurface three miles at $60,000 per mile, for a total of $180,000.

Road & Bridge staff said microsurfacing the designated chip-and-seal roads would save the county approximately $10,000 compared with the combined cost of extensive patching and chip-and-seal operations. "We're saving $10,000 by doing the microsurfacing," staff said during the presentation.

Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the proposal 3-0. Road & Bridge will finalize purchase orders and scheduling with the contractor.

Next steps: Staff will sign the piggyback agreement, finalize a purchase order, and schedule microsurfacing work when weather and crews allow.
