The Town of Cheshire School Building Committee on March 31 reviewed mockups of dedication plaques for the new Barnum and Norton schools after several town officials asked that the names of the Board of Education and Town Council be included.
Sean Kimball, a committee member, told colleagues that he and others had encouraged residents to submit written feedback and that “the consensus was…they felt it should be a more inclusive plaque,” summarizing messages from the mayor, the Board of Education chair and other correspondents.
Committee members described a split between those who favor broader recognition of individuals and those who prefer listing organizations only. One member argued that omitting names prevents later disputes about who is included, saying, “You leave people off there and you never you might never hear from them.” Another member said the committee already voted on a plaque without the board and council names and questioned reopening previously decided business.
After discussion, a motion was made to reconsider the earlier vote to remove names. The committee conducted a procedural vote on whether to reconsider; the motion to reopen the item was put to a vote and then members moved to table further action. The committee voted to table the matter and deferred a final decision to a future meeting with the item placed on the next agenda.
Committee members said they had received several formal correspondences — including emails from Peter Talbot, Samantha Rosenberg and Don Walsh — and that staff had circulated the comments for members’ review. Several members indicated they wanted a fuller committee present before making any change; staff noted production timelines for the plaques and said a special meeting could be scheduled if the committee wished to act sooner.
No final change to the plaque design was made at the meeting; the committee’s vote to table leaves the prior design decision in place until the issue returns to the agenda.
