Valerius students showcase 'student jobs' program at Urbandale board meeting

Valerius school staff presented the school's student-jobs program to the Urbandale board on March 30, describing a structured, trimester-based system in which elementary students apply and interview for roles that build real-world readiness. Counselors Claire Rian and Kim Van Hill explained that the program uses teacher input, applications, interviews and community volunteers (including HR representatives) to give students authentic job experience.

Students described specific roles and the personal benefits they reported. Fourth grader Aubrey said the interview made her "feel good and a bit nervous, but when I started answering the questions, it helped," and that she looks forward to her pantry job. Another student described the breakfast-tray role and said doing the job "makes you feel good" and helps him focus for the school day. Staff presenters emphasized that jobs rotate by trimester to broaden opportunity and that facilitators support students in learning responsibility, time management and empathy.

Presenters said the program also produced operational benefits: students helped reduce food waste through a sharing table (developed after guidance from nutrition services director Jesse Stadler), supported the school pantry, and cared for building plantings. Counselors and facilitators said the work strengthened student relationships and provided new avenues for student leadership. The board received the presentation; no formal action was required.
