The North Newton School Corp board approved a revised course-description handbook for North High School at its March 18 meeting, clearing the way for textbook purchases and course planning ahead of next school year.
Board members said the handbook is a condensed, easier-to-read version of a previously long and inconsistent document. The revised book includes course codes, credit values, recommended grade levels, prior-course requirements, dual-credit offerings and an example four-year plan. Trustees also highlighted a gym waiver intended to help multi-sport students.
During discussion trustees pressed curriculum staff about career-technical education (CTE) paths and how new programs would be added. One trustee asked whether programs such as welding could be incorporated; staff said the handbook currently lists courses the district can offer with existing staff but that new programs could be added later and highlighted that the state prescribes sequences for concentrator and principal classes in a CTE pathway.
Trustees approved the handbook by voice vote. Curriculum staff said they would post the handbook online, make edits over the summer if new programs are added and begin necessary textbook purchases after board approval.
