Students detail Sound Fest, raise funds and plan follow-up events

Student leaders presented Shakopee Sound Fest to the board as a student‑run effort to showcase local bands and expand access to music for fellow students. Shania and Brian described how the event grew from band rehearsals and planning with activities director Mr. Brown into an evening that hosted nine student groups and even one teachers’ band.

Nathan Nava and other student performers reflected on the short planning timeline and how the show helped form new bands; students said one group, Gumball, formed specifically for the event and intends to continue playing. Presenters said the event raised about $700 from merchandise and ticketing; they directed the proceeds to the We Play Foundation, a band‑booster run charity that provides instruments to students who lack access.

Students are exploring a possible follow‑up show slated tentatively for May 29 (last Friday of May) and are considering outdoor venues such as the new amphitheater. Organizers said a student‑led continuity plan is in development: juniors and other students have volunteered to maintain the event next year.

Board members praised the student initiative and suggested using district facilities and communications to help grow the event. The presentation included a request for support and an offer to run future events with district staff and volunteers.
