The Merced City Arts and Culture Commission unanimously approved the Future Arts subcommittee’s recommendation to award the R Street undercrossing mural project to Saul Gonzalez Lauraniano.
Colton, who described the subcommittee process, said the panel of three reviewers used a 100‑point rubric and reviewed eight on‑time proposals plus additional electronic and mailed submissions, and that Saul’s design scored highest. "Based on the results of this evaluation the subcommittee recommended awarding the project to Saul Gonzalez Lauraniano's mural Baja Misimo," Colton said.
Commissioners reviewed artist portfolios and concept materials from multiple applicants, including Alexandra Jade, Andrea Torres, Desiree Kelly, Kenan Warren, Patricia Pratt, Ramon Valencia and Ceunel Everest. Commissioners discussed the RFP’s mention of interactive elements; staff clarified that interactive features were encouraged but not required. One commissioner suggested producing explanatory videos and clearer addenda for future solicitations to reduce confusion for applicants.
A motion to approve the recommendation was recorded by Chair Hypes as made by Commissioner Kamarta with a second by Commissioner Tran, and the Chair announced the motion passed unanimously. Staff said the commission will present the decision to the city council as a report and notify the selected artist, with contracts expected to issue at the end of April to allow council review.
The commission’s action concludes its role in artist selection; the city council will receive the report and contracts will be issued to proceed toward installation.
