The Orange Unified School District Board on May 7 voted unanimously to open a 30-day public review period for three recommended instructional materials.
Educational Services staff presented a teacher-driven adoption process for middle school math that included pilot work and a district consensus day. Lisa Green said Classroom Mathematics California was selected as the program that "best meets the needs of the students in our district" after teacher review and publisher presentations. The board noted concern from some sixth-grade GATE teachers and staff clarified the adoption is k-8 and that the sixth-grade materials include Desmos integration.
For early childhood, staff recommended Frog Street for Orange Pre-K based on alignment with California Preschool learning foundations and classroom management supports. For Canyon High's IB program, staff recommended the Oxford University Press text IB Philosophy: Being Human, citing its development in cooperation with IB and alignment with DP expectations.
Trustee Vane moved to open the 30-day review; Trustee Pelley seconded. The motion passed 7-0. Staff said materials will be posted for community review and commented that feedback will inform final adoption decisions.
The 30-day review period allows parents, teachers and community members to examine sample materials and submit comments before the board considers final adoption.
