Marcela Rodrdiguez Villagr
n, host of the Spanish-language program En Sintonda, introduced Mariela Le3n as a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Department and the county's Latino community liaison. Le3n described a free Spanish-language workshop for parents and caregivers on preventing sexual violence and connecting families with resources.
"La prevenci3n no es responsabilidad solo de la policda," Le3n said, emphasizing that the program brings education "directamente a la comunidad en espa
nol" so families can learn how to detect warning signs and talk with children. She cited a survey from the CDC and RAIN and said "m
s del 90 por 100 de los ni1os que sufren de abuso sexual conocen a la persona que les hizo da1o," to underline why early, home-based conversations and community training matter.
Le3n said detectives and representatives from several local organizations will participate, and attendees will receive a free copy of the book Everybody Talks to help caregivers use correct words for body parts and to start age-appropriate conversations with children. She said the workshop will include information on how to recognize behavioral changes in children, what to do if abuse is suspected, and where to find emotional and legal support.
The workshop is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 5:30 p.m. and is free. Le3n asked listeners to register via the QR code on the event flyer or to contact her by email (address provided on air). She also listed resources and reporting options, including calling 911 for emergencies or the county non-emergency line at 301-279-8000. Le3n stressed confidentiality and urged immigrant community members that police will not ask about immigration status when a report is made.
Why this matters: the session aims to remove language barriers to prevention and to give Spanish-speaking families practical tools and referral information. Organizers said the goal is both to prevent abuse where possible and to make sure victims and families know how to obtain confidential help.
The county invited those interested to register in advance so organizers can provide materials for participants.
