The UNIFIL force commander said a solemn ceremony was held at Beirut International Airport earlier today to honor three Indonesian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving in South Lebanon under the United Nations flag. The commander said the three were members of the Indonesian Armed Forces and that the mission “is carried forward by people like them, brave, committed, and selfless.”
The commander called the moment the "hardest" of their tenure and said, "We have not only lost peacekeepers, we have lost brothers. They will remain part of this mission, part of all of us." He emphasized that the deaths underscore the realities and risks of peacekeeping, saying the sacrifice "reminds us of the reality of peacekeeping."
The three peacekeepers were posthumously awarded UNIFIL and Lebanese Armed Forces medals in recognition of their service in South Lebanon, the commander said, and he framed their contribution as meaningful to preserving peace and to the enduring friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Lebanon. No further operational details or circumstances of the deaths were provided in the remarks.
The ceremony and awards reflect UNIFIL's ongoing multinational peacekeeping role in southern Lebanon and the human costs associated with that mission.
