Resident says enforcement of box-truck parking rule threatens livelihood; mayor cites road diet and chief announces meeting security screening

During the public-comment portion of the Wildwood Crest Board of Commissioners meeting, resident Arswald Salvatico said he has been repeatedly cited by police for parking a box truck he uses to sell musical instruments and that the truck’s registration shows 5,000 pounds. "I keep getting harassed every 3 days or so by the police department," Salvatico said, adding the truck is his livelihood and asking for more time or assistance to find off-street storage.

Mayor (presiding) responded that county roadway reconstruction on New Jersey Avenue will “skinn[y] up” the street in what he described as a road diet, reducing travel lanes and creating safety and clearance issues for larger vehicles. "What you see as four wide lanes will become one turning lane and one through lane," the mayor said, explaining that narrower lanes make parking large box trucks a safety concern and that enforcement follows a police request tied to those safety conditions. The mayor encouraged Salvatico to seek off-street parking with his landlord’s permission or to contact the police department or Commissioner Franco to discuss accommodations.

The resident disputed whether he had previously discussed parking with the mayor and described early-morning police visits he said felt like harassment. The mayor offered to speak with the resident after the meeting; the public-comment exchange ended without formal board action on the matter.

Separately, the police chief announced a new security-screening procedure that will begin at the next commission meeting on April 15. The chief said an officer will staff a metal detector at the front lobby and that all bags will be subject to inspection; attendees found with contraband during screening would be subject to arrest. "If you don't want your bags to be inspected by a police officer, please do not bring them with you," the chief said.
