Sayreville approves riparian/tidelands application to clear title to former tidelands at Riverton

The Sayreville Economic and Redevelopment Agency voted March 12 to authorize the submission of a riparian/tidelands grant application to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s tidal‑lands bureau so a redeveloper can clear title to land that was once tidelands in the Riverton redevelopment area.

Staff explained the action is a standard title-cleanup step when former tidal areas have been filled and are claimed by the state; the developer has prepared an updated tidelands map and will pay application costs. Agency staff said the planned waterfront walkway will be constructed by the redeveloper but dedicated as an easement to the county to preserve public access.

Commissioners asked whether the grant would allow development of those lands; staff said there is no plan to develop the former tidelands and the principal purpose is to resolve state title so the redevelopment can proceed without jurisdictional uncertainty. The board approved Resolution 2026.03.10 by roll-call vote.

What happens next: the developer will file the updated tidelands map and application with the state; the agency will monitor application progress and ensure the public-access easement is recorded.
