The Northlake Police Department promoted Dwight Thornton to captain during a pinning ceremony at the May 13 Town Council meeting.
Police chief introduced Thornton's record and noted his nearly 19 years of law enforcement experience across college police, a constable's office and Northlake service. "Dwight Thornton has almost 19 years of police experience working for college police departments, a constable's office, and finally being part of Northlake Police Department as well," the chief said, highlighting Thornton's supervisory awards, training credentials and service history. Family members participated in the pinning and the chief ceremonially passed captain's bars that had been used by prior leaders as a tradition.
Why it matters: The promotion assigns experienced leadership to the department at a time of staff transitions described earlier by town management. The ceremony also reinforced a new tradition of pinning command-level officers.
The mayor and council congratulated Thornton and the meeting proceeded to staff introductions and other ceremonial items before adjournment.
