At the Rockford Public School District s board meeting, IB diploma candidates, career-pathway students and middle school leaders described academic and extracurricular work and highlighted student-led initiatives.
Students from the high school described the rigors of the IB diploma program and the career-pathway CNA program. One presenter estimated the district s dual-enrollment and exam-credit work could translate to roughly $277,000 in potential college-cost savings for families, using three-credit conversions as a standard for preliminary calculations. Students described writing extended essays, completing creativity and service requirements and balancing athletics and other commitments while pursuing the diploma.
Middle school student council secretary Veronica outlined a spring program of activities including an eighth-grade celebration at a local bowling center and a wellness day on May 30 that will give students 15 to 25 minutes in class for wellness activities such as walking, coloring, poetry or mindful movement. Student presenters also described a composting pilot in the cafeteria and an outdoor classroom cleanup led by volunteers.
Students and principals noted extracurricular success as well, including middle- and high-school FFA teams advancing to state and national competitions and strong spring performances in athletics and music.
Board members praised the students work and asked procedural questions about sustaining pilot projects and integrating student initiatives into building plans. Administrators said they will track baseline data for new facilities and programs and share results with the board.
