Committee streamlines Renaissance Board appointments, affirms mayoral final approval

Members reviewed a proposed municipal order that streamlines creation and appointment of the Renaissance Board and clarifies that the mayor is the final authority for appointments, consistent with how several other boards are handled.

Staff said the prior municipal order was more complicated than necessary and that streamlining would align the Renaissance Board process with other boards. Several council members argued for keeping the mayor as the final decision-maker for expedited appointments; others recommended the council retain the ability to review or veto nominations as a "second set of eyes."

Staff noted the operational history: economic development staff and department heads typically screen applicants and make recommendations; design-review and other boards have their own review paths. The committee did not change the municipal order at the meeting but instructed staff to update the language and return it for council consideration.

The committee also discussed whether the municipal order should instead be an ordinance so council would have explicit approval authority consistent with other boards; no change was adopted at the meeting.
