Board urges immediate budgeting for Kids Kingdom replacement; staff to redraft recommendation letter

Board members pressed for quicker action on replacing the Kids Kingdom playground, which staff and members said is nearing the end of its useful life. Staff estimated a replacement would cost at least $1.2 million if the city were to replace the existing equipment and recommended including the replacement in the River Parks master-plan priorities.

Members urged the city and park staff to begin identifying funding now so a replacement could be programmed into the next budget cycle rather than delayed until after master-plan completion. "Start finding the money right now," one board member said, noting that waiting until master-plan publication risks the playground becoming unusable in 2027.

Staff said they would redraft the recommendation letter to emphasize Kids Kingdom’s urgency, add pursuit of development-corporation support, and circulate the draft to board members for comment so the letter can be forwarded to the mayor and council without waiting for the next meeting.

The board discussed survey feedback for the master plan—more than 1,000 responses viewed by staff—with maintenance and safety among the top public concerns. Members asked staff to program estimated replacement costs for other playgrounds as well to avoid future service interruptions.
