Representatives of the Maryland Municipal League and municipal leaders used the annual meeting to thank the Montgomery County Council for resolving a multi-decade tax-duplication dispute and for approving related funding.
"You signed both the expedited bill 2 22 as well as the, supplemental appropriation for FY, 22," Monique Ashton told the council, calling the council "historic" for its action and noting unanimous support. Municipal leaders said the result means more resources for services and reimbursements that will support local projects.
Tom Hucker, who said he sponsored a special appropriation, described a $5,000,000 supplemental appropriation that provided seed funding to begin reimbursements and praised the council members and municipal advocates who worked on the issue for years.
Why it matters: Ending tax duplication affects municipal finances and can free funds for local road safety, police reimbursement and other municipal services. Municipal leaders said the appropriation will help pay projects and reimbursements that previously went unpaid.
Next steps: Municipal leaders said they will stay in close touch with the county about implementation and thanked council leaders for the collaboration that reached unanimous support.
