Department heads updated the board on public safety and community programming.
Police: Chief Mays told the board motor vehicle thefts increased 71.4% and traffic stops increased about 37.6%; he said the department will have the crime intelligence analyst examine patterns (time, location) and noted increases in assaults and some death categories while injury crashes were down. "Motor vehicle theft is up 71.4%. I'm not happy with this," he said.
Parks: David McGowan reported operational metrics (91 help‑desk tickets, 673 man‑hours) and announced a carnival running May 15–24 (specific operating days noted) and a community water event May 29 in partnership with Luvarn Fire Department. He also described a passport program for bicentennial events and commemorative coins and stamps for event participation.
Library: Donna Bebau outlined April programs and previewed the summer reading program "Unearth a Story," the kickoff on May 30 (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), and a Panda Express sponsorship donating 300 bookmarks that will include space for tracking five books and a kids' meal coupon.
Why it matters: The police crime trend is a public safety issue prompting further analysis; parks and library programs offer community engagement and seasonal services for families and seniors.
