The Stewart County School Board took time to honor the district transportation department and maintenance crews for their work in challenging weather and for supporting students and events.
A speaker identified as Daryl described early‑morning and night efforts by bus drivers, highlighted road and weather challenges, and thanked the drivers and maintenance staff. The board asked present bus drivers to stand so attendees could acknowledge them.
Board members discussed access issues to the back ball field for grandparents and spectators, noting arrangements such as golf carts or district vans to assist attendees. Members also discussed middle‑school game transportation: bus routes sometimes end earlier than game start times and the district may deploy a van if drivers are available.
Officials clarified licensing requirements: drivers of vans with fewer than 10 passengers may operate on a regular driver’s license; commercial or shuttle buses require a different license. The district’s seven‑passenger vans were cited as a practical choice to avoid additional licensing requirements. Members also noted cheerleading mats purchased in 2003 need replacement; the school has purchased two new mats and the team requested about six more.
No formal action was taken; members asked staff to follow up on transportation logistics and consider equipment support for cheerleading.
