Switzerland County approves summer roadwork plan and hires three seasonal workers

At the Switzerland County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting on April 20, 2026, Highway Superintendent Dusty Hunt outlined the department’s summer work plan and asked the board to approve seasonal help.

Hunt said crews have been hauling chips and stockpiling “53Bs” for shoulder work and are planning to complete roughly 30 miles of chip-and-seal this season, aiming for level 4 and 5 treatments. He also reminded the board that county Spring Cleanup is scheduled for Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3. “Reminder—Spring cleanup Friday May 1st thru Sunday 3rd,” Hunt said.

After discussion about the workload required to keep up with mowing and the planned pavement work, Commissioner Jamie Peters moved to hire three part-time summer workers; Commissioner Joe Bennett seconded the motion, which passed with all in favor. The board did not specify start dates for the hires during the meeting.

Hunt additionally reported that line striping is scheduled for Monday, April 27, and noted the highway department is working from chip-seal road-selection spreadsheets to sequence level 4 and 5 projects.

The board’s action funds the seasonal hires from local road maintenance sources discussed in the meeting; no detailed personnel start dates or wage rates were specified on the record. The board did not set further requirements or conditions beyond the motion to hire.

The county will proceed with the contracted line striping and the planned chip-and-seal program; supervisors will return to the board if further budget adjustments or contract approvals are needed.
