At its May 7 meeting, the DeSoto County Schools board approved a multi-item consent agenda that included procurement awards, vendor payments, a special-education summer program and numerous personnel recommendations.
Procurement and contracts: The board approved accepting the Apple Inc. bid for brand-specific Apple products and approved the lowest/best bid from Optimum Food LLC to supply meal kits for the district’s summer feeding program. The board also approved a contract with Amplify for a universal screener and intervention-instruction program following evaluation of RFP responses.
Payments and reimbursements: The board approved requests to reimburse employees who used personal debit cards for fuel and bus-related purchases after reviewing receipts and supporting documentation; it also approved a request to reimburse an employee for an Albranch Hospital payment and agreed to pay certain vendors for services rendered prior to issuance of purchase orders.
Special education summer program: The special-education department requested a summer program for students who are significantly visually impaired or blind (Braille instruction, expanded core curriculum, orientation and mobility). The superintendent said federal special-education allocations would cover the program’s expenses; the board approved the program, and a flyer was included in the meeting packet.
Personnel and policy: The board heard detailed personnel recommendations and approved numerous summer-pay items and stipends (multiple pages of summer committee assignments, ESY staffing, and hourly rates). The board also approved a revision to policy JNB to update eligibility language.
Votes: Routine motions were made and seconded for each item, with board members responding 'Aye' when votes were called. The meeting transcript records repeated unanimous vocal approval for the consent items.
What’s next: The superintendent introduced retirements and new principal appointments later in the meeting; the board moved to consider executive session items on student discipline, potential litigation and personnel.
