Two tenth-grade students, Sophia Shay and Claire Good, asked the Carlisle Area School District board to approve a student-led group called Club America and said they had encountered administrative delays in securing an advisor and posting notices.
Sophia Shay told the board the students first met with Dr. Buffington and later identified Mr. Akers as a school advisor. She said attempts to advertise the club in the building were blocked until central office approval, and that inability to meet during the designated Bison Block period effectively prevented the club from operating. "Legally, the school is not allowed to block us from starting and practicing our club," Sophia said, citing the Equal Access Act and outlining the law's conditions for equal treatment of student-initiated groups.
Board members and the presiding officer responded that the superintendent would follow up. The presiding officer asked Dr. Black to get the students' contact information and promised a district response. No formal action was taken at the meeting beyond the commitment to follow up.
Why it matters: students described an operational barrier to forming a school club and invoked a federal statute; administration's follow-up will determine whether the district will permit the club to meet during school hours and display promotional materials.
Next step: administration (superintendent/central office) to contact students and report back to the board.
