Students from Wilton Elementary's Student Lighthouse presented a plan for a schoolwide community service day on May 8, asking the board and local businesses to support activities such as trash pick-up, flower and tree plantings and field preparations.
"When people think about making a difference in town, they usually think about adults. But we believe leadership has no age requirement," a student told the board during the presentation led by Mrs. Capri and members of the student group.
The students said their library specialist will select a picture book to be read to all students to create a shared mission for the day, and teachers will share resources and videos to help students understand service-learning benefits. They described prior efforts that included field preparations for sports teams and plantings at local fairgrounds.
Board members complimented the group for their initiative and asked logistical questions about the number of groups and activities; students said they have already presented to the city council and other community groups and invited board members to sign up or support routes and sites.
The presentation closed with board encouragement and an invitation for the student team to return with a sign-up plan. No formal board action was required; the presentation was accepted as an informational item.
