Bedford board refers vacant seat to probate court and adds executive session for personnel and legal matters

The Bedford Board of Education discussed a board member vacancy created by the April 10 resignation of Miss Carter and agreed to refer the matter to the county probate court after the board could not reach an appointment within the 30‑day window.

The treasurer told the board the district received 22 applications and conducted three days of interviews but was unable to complete the appointment within the statutory timeframe; the board will formally turn the vacancy over to the probate court the next morning to allow the court to fill the seat.

The board also approved adding an executive session to the agenda for reasons the board identified on the record: to consider the employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion or compensation of a public employee; to consult with legal counsel about disputes subject to pending or imminent court action; and to prepare for or conduct collective-bargaining negotiations. The board voted to enter executive session and said that no other public business would be discussed afterward.

No appointment or public action on the vacancy occurred during the public portion of the meeting; the board recorded that the probate court will act on the appointment and that the public session was closed for executive session business.
