The Business District Commission opened its meeting by discussing participation in Webster Groves’ 250th Fourth of July celebration and parade, including banners, giveaways and a possible float. Chair called for volunteers and logistics planning; Jerry said he would lead the effort and deliver a full plan at the next meeting.
Members raised several logistical points for businesses planning to march or ride: wheel chocks will be required for moving vehicles and organizers should complete the parade application (no application fee was reported). The route was described by a liaison as starting at the high school, proceeding down Lockwood, turning left on Big Bend, turning right on Elm and ending at the recreation center.
“We’ve got to have wheel lockers,” the Chair said when noting requirements for moving vehicles. The Sustainability Commission liaison urged sustainable giveaways: “No plastic tchotchke, please,” she said, and members discussed branded stickers or candy and a banner to identify the BDC’s presence.
Jerry volunteered to coordinate the effort. “I would love it…If so, I shall accept,” he said when asked to chair the parade subteam; he promised a full plan at next month’s meeting and said the BDC would invite businesses to walk with the group and to display merchandise or branded items.
The group also discussed outreach through the BDC newsletter and recruiting merchants to march or host a banner. Next steps: Jerry will prepare a detailed plan for the June meeting and staff will confirm parade application details and any required safety equipment.
