The North Kingstown Building Advisory Committee on May 6 approved a Rhode Island Energy engineering-services rebate agreement for Woodford Middle School that the project team said would be paid from the incentive package rather than require an upfront district payment.
Project presenter (speaker 6) described the agreement as a standard program for new-construction school projects in which Rhode Island Energy engages a consultant to model building energy use and identify eligible rebates and incentives. The presenter said the district’s out‑of‑pocket responsibility would be limited to a $5,237.50 engineering fee that would effectively be covered by the incentive package: “So, in essence, it would be at no cost.”
Committee members asked whether the district would need to pay the consultant upfront; the presenter replied it was not necessary. Superintendent Brenda moved to accept the agreement and a committee member seconded the motion. The motion passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: the engineering assessment will produce energy-use modeling that the district and Rhode Island Energy will use to identify incentives and potential long-term efficiency measures for the new school. The committee said the assessment is an early step in shaping design decisions and future incentive eligibility.
What’s next: the project team will proceed with the engineering assessment under the Rhode Island Energy program and return any subsequent incentive calculations or recommended measures to the committee for consideration.
