The Roseville City Council approved a one-time increase in council discretionary funds for safe-and-sober graduation-night events, allocating $700 each to Roseville, Wood Creek, Oakmont and West Park high schools.
School representatives had urged the council to increase past support, saying fundraising and travel costs have climbed. "The buses alone for our school were $28,000," Kim Homa, a Wood Creek parent, told the council, adding that the per-school $500 donation previously provided amounted to about $3 per student.
In a staff presentation the council heard that the discretionary fund balance for the fiscal year was $6,821 before the vote and that the proposal to raise the per-school contribution to $700 would leave a modest remaining balance until the fund is replenished at the start of the new fiscal year. Council discussion focused on balancing the council’s limited discretionary dollars with the requests from four schools; one member described $700 as a responsible compromise.
A council motion to approve $700 per school was moved and seconded and carried on a roll-call vote.
City staff said representatives from each school were present to answer questions and thanked the council for the contribution. The council did not attach additional conditions; the allocation was listed as an expenditure from council discretionary funds and will be reflected in the city’s fiscal records.
