The Butte-Silver Bow Council of Commissioners voted unanimously May 6 to appoint deputy coroner Marcy Cameron as the interim coroner after a resignation effective April 30.
Council chairman John Morgan introduced Communication 2026-248 asking the council to appoint an interim coroner and to advertise the permanent vacancy. Morgan said the council will advertise for two weeks and interview applicants the evening of May 20. "We need to appoint a new coroner within 60 days of the vacancy," Morgan said, describing the timeline to place resumes before commissioners and hold interviews at the regular meeting on May 20.
Morgan moved to appoint Marcy Cameron as interim coroner; the motion was seconded and carried 12 yays, 0 nays. Chief Executive Gallagher and other speakers noted deputy coroners support Cameron’s experience: "She has the experience," Gallagher said, adding that interim duties would continue until the council fills the seat after the May 20 interviews and the November election cycle.
Several commissioners asked procedural questions about how the vacancy will appear on upcoming ballots and the 10-day filing period for candidates. Gallagher and commissioners said the clerk and recorder’s office would provide filing guidance and that state law drives the filing timeline.
Next steps: the council directed staff to advertise the vacancy, accept resumes through the advertised period and hold interviews on May 20 as described in Communication 2026-248.
