Representatives from Shelby Christian County told the Christian County Commission on May 7 that the organization has been granted official destination marketing organization (DMO) status by the state and immediately applied for a state matching marketing grant limited to DMOs.
The presenter said the state program is intended for external marketing in markets more than 50 miles from the destination and that the group’s submitted marketing plan includes billboards, magazine ads and digital campaigns. “Those dollars have to be spent in markets that are more than 50 miles from wherever our destination is,” the presenter said, naming Joplin, Kansas City, Lebanon and Rogers, Ark., as target markets and saying the county is also running digital ads tied to Springfield’s Route 66 events and Branson activity.
Staff said the grant program can match local dollars and that DMOs are eligible to apply for up to $30,000; the presenters reported their current proposal is a roughly $12,000 program made up of local match and partner funds. They cautioned the program requires follow-through on a majority of promised activities to be eligible again.
Commissioners asked how the DMO designation differs from the prior arrangement with Springfield and about the size of the application. A commissioner noted Springfield previously served as the DMO for Christian County and said the local designation allows the county to focus promotion on Christian County attractions rather than a regional push.
The presenters also reviewed ongoing business‑attraction work, saying the organization currently tracks about 15 active projects and assists companies with site selection and access to state resources and application support. They cited recent ribbon‑cuttings for a Smile Center, the Chadwick Flyer trail, a rehabilitation hospital and a new grocery store.
The commission did not take formal action on the report; commissioners thanked the presenters and encouraged continued coordination on the road project that ties to the Chadwick Flyer crossing.
The commission will receive any future grant analytics if presenters return with results from the advertising campaign.
