The Madison City Public Arts Commission voted May 7 to approve an eight-foot metal sculpture titled "Community Layers" for placement at the Vernon and Vaughn trailhead, part of the Heritage Trail improvements.
Representatives from the Heritage Trail Conservancy described the concept as a layered tree that honors three elements of the community: those who serve, the local business community and residents. Fabricator Chuck Stewart of Madison Iron and Wood presented a small mock-up and explained the design and fabrication approach, saying the piece is "basically, a tree in layers." The conservancy said the installation will include a QR code to provide a trail brochure and map.
Commissioners discussed placement near the trailhead, connection to new sidewalks from First Street down Vernon, and related trailhead amenities including bike racks and water fountains. Staff and the conservancy said the trailhead project and the public art piece are privately funded through donations; the conservancy thanked IKEC and other donors for their support.
Chair asked for a motion to approve "Community Layers" as outlined by the presenters; commissioners moved, seconded and approved the sculpture by voice vote.
The commission did not enter a detailed roll-call vote in the transcript. Fabrication timeline was discussed: the presenter indicated efforts to complete the work in time for a ribbon-cutting in early June, though heavy spring rains had delayed work slightly. Staff will coordinate final placement details and follow up with a recommendation to the commission if locations change.
